The Dutch province of Drenth is called the historical homeland of these beautiful and agile animals. They are also called Dutch patridgedogs, the word “patridge” is translated from Dutch as “partridge”. The first data on Drents partridge dogs date back to the 16th century, but the breed is much older. There is no exact indication of who was the ancestor of dogs. It is assumed that they were cops, Spanish and French , as well as Munsterländer and French spaniel . Outwardly, the animal at the same time looks like both a setter and a spaniel.
Due to the intimacy of the habitat, breeders managed to avoid crossing partridge dogs with other breeds, which ensured pure blood.
In 1943, the Drentsy received official recognition from the IFF .
Drents partridge dogs are little known in other countries, but in the Netherlands they are quite popular. They hunt birds with them, they have a sharp sense of smell, easily find prey, make a stand on it, and bring the killed game to the owner. They run fast, swim well, work on the blood trail.
Rectangular dog with strong muscular paws. The head is medium-sized, firmly planted on a strong neck. The chest is wide. Amber eyes. The ears are covered with long hair, hanging down.
The tail is long, covered with wool with dewlap. In a calm state, lowered down. The coat on the body of the dog is of medium length, coarse, straight. Long on ears, paws and tail. The color is white with brown or red spots, may be tricolor (with a red tinge) or black-and-black, which is less desirable.
Drentse Patrijshond Character
Breeders have developed the hunting instinct in Drents dogs for centuries . Today, they almost do not need to be taught – nature has fixed all the necessary skills. In the Netherlands they are called “the dog for the intelligent hunter”. They do not bark in vain, they only give a voice in case of some kind of problem, they are friendly to people, but at the same time they are excellent watchmen and, if necessary, defenders. Loyal to their owners, love their home, never want to run away. They are great with children, even small ones. They calmly treat small domestic animals, including cats, which is rare for hunting breeds.
Dogs are unpretentious and do not require special care. Standard ear cleaning and nail trimming procedures are carried out as needed. The coat is combed out with a stiff brush once a week, more often during shedding. It is not necessary to bathe the animal often, the coat is perfectly self-cleaning.
